Cyprus, Paphos, House of Theseus - Mosaic depicting the first bath of Achilles. Baby Achilles sits in the lap of his nurse Anatrophe. He is accompanied by his mother Thetis and his father Peleus. Unusually, the scene also features the Three Fates - Klotho, Lachesis and Athropos. Although normally it is told that Achilles was dipped in the river Styx, here he is about to be washed in a water basin. The water is being brought by a woman called Ambrosia, a reference to the liquid that awards eternal life (early 5th century AD).
