Greece, Athens - Greek Agora - Temple and Altar of Ares - Doric peripteral temple, dating from 450-475 BC, with pronaos, cella and opisthodomos. Its monumental stepped marble altar was built in the 4th century BC. Originally the two monuments stood elsewhere. At the end of the 1st century BC, at the command of the Roman Emperor Augustus, the temple and the altar were disassembled, transferred to the Agora and reassembled. In order to assure a correct reassembly, masons inscribed its stones with identifying marks. Decorative sculpture from the temple is on display in the Museum of the Ancient Agora. Both monuments were destroyed in AD 267 in the Herulian invasion.
