Kyrenia castle was built in the 7th century, probably to defend the town against Arab raids. The small Church of St. George near the entrance was originally outside the castle, until the Venetian period when it was enveloped by the new walls. It is thought to have been built just before 1100 AD. Access to the castle is gained by a drawbridge. The moat surrounding the walls was full of water until 1400.
