Akrai (Palazzolo Acreide) (136 pictures, 3 videos)

This town lies up against the spurs of the Hyblaean Hills, in the upper Anapo Valley. The ancient Syracusan colony of Akrai was settled in the 7th century BC. The theater was built in the 3rd century BC, and although small is fairly well preserved. The bouleuterion stands close by, at the agora. The remains of an archaic temple building (6th century BC) on the acropolis provide evidence that a Temple of Aphrodite once stood there.
