Mycenae is located on top of a hill overlooking the plain of Argos and the Gulf of Nafplion. Remains dating from the 17th to the 12th centuries BC have been found here, including a 16th century BC royal cemetery. The palace was built between 1350 and 1330 BC. The city's walls were built in the middle of the 4th century BC and were further extended about a century later. Other finds include remains of houses, tholos tombs and a granary.The site was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999.
