The Heraion stands at the outlet of the Imbrasos River. According to myth, this was the birthplace of Hera. The Temple of Hera (538-522 BC) is the largest Greek temple ever built. Opposite the temple, a small coeval Ionic monopteros protected the base of the temple's cult statue (8th century BC). Nearby lie the ruins of a smaller temple of Hera (31 BC-14 AD) and of the altar (570-560 BC).
