Epidauros - Temple of Asklepios (2 pictures)

The temple of Asklepios stands at the center of the sacred enclosure. Built in 380 BC to replace a more ancient structure, this poros Doric peripteral temple hexastyle (6 x 11 columns) once boasted pediments and acroteria by the great Timotheos. A large number of building materials were used to construct the temple, ranging from Pentelic marble to ivory, gold and highly prized wood as well as stone in various hues.

For more information about the history and archaeology of Epidauros see Epidauros in the Knowledge Center.
