Choirokoitia was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1998. The settlement stretches over the steep slope of a hill at the locality called Vounoi, on the west bank of the Maroni River, 6km from the south coast. The first inhabitants settled at Choirokoitia in 7,000-5,800 BC. The basic architectural unit is a circular structure with a flat roof. A habitation unit or house may be defined as a compound of several of these units around an unroofed space.
