An impressive Crusader fortress was built at this site, close to the remains of an ancient Jewish town named "Kochav" (a star). Only in 1189 did the Muslim forces headed by Saladin succeed in capturing Belvoir. In 1220 the fortress was destroyed to prevent its re-annexation by the Crusaders. In the 18th century an Arab village was established on the ruins of the fortress. The remains include the moat, towers, gates and the covered inner courtyards.
