See also: The archaeological sites of Lycia Description The Lycian way is a 509km long footpath in Turkey, stretching from Fethiye to Antalya around part of the coast of ancient Lycia. The trail was researched, designed and implemented by Kate Clow and Terry Richardson and was authorized by the Turkish Government. The trail has been divided to shorter routes, 10-25km each, that are graded medium to hard and have many ascents and descents. They overflow with beautiful landscapes, pine forests, natural bays, beaches, and archaeological sites. Three of the routes are described in detail in these pages, with others to come. Routes: Route I: Tekirova - Cirali The route starts at the resort town of Tekirova and proceeds southward until Cirali. Most of the route follows a paved path running through a luscious pine forest above beautiful natural bays. The route is almost 22km long and takes about 8 hours from start to end, including a 1.5 hour rest. It is of medium difficulty, mostly because of several climbs over rocky slopes to and from the natural bays along the route.
Route II: Ulupinar - Cirali - Olympos (Archaeological site) Starting at the village of Ulupinar, the trail stretches among pine forests and flowing streams. It is a relatively short and easy route, only 12km with occasional short climbs. The highlights of the route are the Chimaera phenomena, where flames of burning Methane gas are rising from the rocky surface. Concluding the trail is a visit to the archaeological site of Olympos, where remains of Hellenistic and Roman temples, bridges, hot springs, tombs, a theater and a Byzantine fortress can still be seen.
Route III: Gedelme (Mese Cukuru) - Roman Bridge - Asagikudzdere This route is 18.4km and considered of low difficulty. Most of the way is carried out on a paved road in a serene landscape, descending from an altitude of 972m to 192m. The route includes several crossings of a flowing river that offer an impressive view of the raging water.
Route IV: Asagikuzdere - Phaselis - Tekirova Enjoy the images of this route.
