On the gravel slopes between Caesarea and Atlit, a small fortress known as "Metzer Ha'bonim" can be found. The fortress is square in shape with external buttresses supporting its walls. Some believe that the fortress was built during the Early Muslim period (7th century). The earliest data concerning the fortress dates from the Late Crusade period (13th century), when the site was transformed into a fortified stronghold. Finally it was conquered by the Muslims.
