The Maa Bronze Age settlement (13th-12th centuries BC) seems to have had some defensive function, standing on the headland, three sides of which are protected by steep cliffs. The remaining side was protected by a wall with two gates. It seems to have been inhabited only sporadically and was abandoned and resettled several times, perhaps after attacks by raiders. Numerous houses have been uncovered and it could have been a military outpost for foreign settlers.
