Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, is mentioned by the name of Ledra in Assyrian sources dating from the 7th century BC. In the Old City are St. Sophia Cathedral, whose construction began in 1208, the Church of St. Catherine and the Church of St. George of De Poulains (14th century), Kyrenia Gate (1562 AD), the Great Inn (1572 AD), a 19th century mansion by the name of Dervish Pasha Konak, Sultan Mahmoud's Library and several 19th century mosques.
