This is the eastern gate to the Old City of Jerusalem. The Lions' Gate was named after the two pairs of lions decorating the gate on both sides. According to legend, the lions were engraved by order of Sultan Suleiman, who had dreamed that he would be killed by lions unless he built a protective wall around the Holy City.
The gate is also known as "St. Stephen's Gate". According to Christian tradition st. Stephen, the protomartyr (first martyr) of Christianity, was stoned to death outside this gate c. 34-35 AD (Act 8:1).
