The city is located in the plain between the Bradano and Basento rivers, and was probably founded in the 7th century BC. The sacred area features several important monuments: a Sacellum of Athena and an agora, both from the 7th century BC, and two temples dedicated to Hera and Apollo (6th century BC). The territory around the city is divided into regular building plots. Later structures are the theater, a Roman castrum, thermal baths and a paleochristium Basilica.
