The discovery of an extensive necropolis at the plateau above the thermal baths has demonstrated the existence of a village in Cungu in the Imperial age (1st-3rd centuries AD). The part of the thermal baths visible today corresponds only to the southern sector of the original building. The name of the 16th century edifice, built further downhill from the baths – the Tavern – testifies to the existence of an ancient staging post (statio or mansio) along this road.
