Lucera's amphitheater, which housed gladiatorial fights, is an outstanding architectural example of amusement sites in the Augustan age (31 BC-14 AD). Located on the borders of Lucera's historical town-center, it was restored by the end of the 1st century AD or in the early 2nd century, but lost its former glory in the last centuries of the Empire, until it reached total decay, when the town was destroyed by Constans II in 663.
