Sepinum was built in Samnitic times (6th-3rd centuries BC) at an altitude of 700m above sea level. The name Saepinum, meaning literally a "fenced-in spot", refers to a prominent characteristic of the old village. The defence walls, towers and gates that now surround the town were begun in the Augustan age (31 BC – 14 AD). Four gates lead to a single crossroad where the two main roads, the "cardum" and the "decumanum" met.
