The new Noto rises 15km from the old city and is considered a true jewel of 18th century Baroque architecture. The Cathedral, completed in 1770 probably to plans of Gagliardi, stands on the vast Piazza del Municipio. Other important buildings are Bishop's Palace and the Salita Nicolaci Theater. The Baroque town of Noto was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2002.
