Piazza Armerina - Villa Romana del Casale (382 pictures)
Piazza Armerina lies along a ridge of the Erei Mountains. According to some sources it already existed before the Roman colonization when it was known as Hibla. The Duomo is a building with Baroque characteristics, which goes back to the 17th century and was built over a previous 15th century church. The attached bell tower belonged to the old 15th century building. In the chapel on the left is a fine wooden Crucifix together with 15th century Madonna and Child. The Villa del Casale is one of the most luxurious Roman villas found. The rich mosaic flooring is the best preserved from the Roman period. The villa was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997.
