Pantalica Necropolis (40 pictures)

The necropolis and the settlement of Pantalica are on a high plain between the valleys of Cava Grande and the river Anapo. Pantalica is one of the largest necropolises in Europe: the more than 5,000 tombs dug out of this calcareous land make it look like an enormous hive (9th-8th century BC). There are not many traces left from the Greek period in Pantalica but there is evidence of an intense life in the Medieval period (4th-15th centuries AD). The necropolis was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2005.
