The religious center of Dodona is the location of a very important sanctuary that held the oracle of Zeus. The sanctuary dates as far back as the Mycenaean period (16th century BC) and reached the height of its splendor between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Dodona owes its current renown, however, to its splendid theater, built by Pyrrhus at the beginning of the 3rd century BC.
