At the end of the 7th century BC Greeks from Samothrace established a series of fortified cities along the coast of Thrace. Mesembria was one of those cities (called Zone). The city has a circuit wall reinforced at intervals with towers. A large part of the city plan has already been revealed, with narrow roads. Houses and shops, a little Temple of Demeter and a big Temple of Apollo have been excavated. A cemetery was found to the west.
