Pella served as the capital of ancient Macedonia as of the 5th century BC. An earthquake destroyed the city in the end of the first decade of the 1st century BC. Archaeological remains include a house from 325-320 BC, decorated with the representation of the Abduction of Helen by Theseus, and the Agora, also from the 4th century BC. A vast number of drainage and water pipes attest to the great concern shown for the health of the inhabitants.
