In 356 BC, King Philip II of Macedon overran the Hellenic cities of Aegean Trace, among them Crenides. He fortified Crenides with a massive wall, settled new colonists there and renamed the city Philippi. Very few remains of the Macedonian city of Philippi have been discovered. These include the city walls and the ancient theater. The central fortress tower, which still commands the acropolis of Philippi today, was built in the 14th century.
