Cappara (53 pictures)

Referred to in the ancient as Capera or Capara, there is uncertainty about when it was founded, although everything indicates that its origin was linked to previous indigenous settlements. We know of its existence at the start of the first century AD. Like other Hispanic cities it become known as a district in 74 AD which lead to a significant boost that can be seen in its gradual building of monuments. Its strategic position in Portugal made it a compulsory stop on the Via de la Plata, being a mansio or stopover for travelers on the route. Being located in the middle of the Via de la Plata, a road which coincides with one of the most important streets in the town, the decumanus maximus, which went underneath the Caparra Arch, made the Roman city a predominantly commercial place. The site has a route with information panels explaining the most important aspects of the city including the well-known tetrapylon arch.
