Amphitheater. A Classical Greek theater was semi-circular on plan, with concentric rings of seats rising steeply from the stage. An amphitheater was elliptical on plan (like the Colosseum in Rome), and was essentially two theaters with the stages joined together to form an arena or pit. Amphitheaters had no Greek precedents.
