Architrave, Epistyle, Epistylium (117 pictures)
The lowest of the divisions of an entablature that rests directly on the abaci of columns. The term also refers to the lintels, jambs and mouldings surrounding a window, door, panel or niche. It can also be applied to the ornament mouldings round the exterior curve of an arch. Architraves in the Doric Order are plain, but in the more elaborate Orders are often divided into three fasciae. In their simplest form the architraves as structural beams rest on columns are called trabes compactiles.
