After Nero's death the Praetorian Guard help Galba receive the throne. However, after he had arrived at Rome fell from grace due to the excess of executions and his stinginess towards the Praetorians. Some of his biggest mistakes were the dismissal of the forces which accompanied him from Spain and the adoption of Calpurnius Piso as his successor. Even though the latter was a nobleman, he lacked talent, experience and charisma. In January of 69 Vitellius proclaimed himself emperor and was supported by the Roman legions in Germania. At the same time, in Rome, Otho received the support of the Praetorians, who raged against Galba for his refusal to pay them their promised grants.
