Assos is situated 100km south of Canakkale, in the vicinity of Behram village. In the year of 1000 BC it was colonized by Aioloi. A Temple of Athena was built in 530 BC at the peak of the acropolis. The theater was built in the 3rd century BC. The walls and the towers on the acropolis are Hellenistic (4th-1st centuries BC), and were repaired later in the Byzantine (4th-7th centuries AD) and Turkish (1516-1917) periods.
