Didyma was a cult center for the city of Miletos. It was situated in the Hisar District of Yenihisar Township, 15km south of Miletos. The cults of Artemis and Apollo prevailed at Didyma. The earliest sanctuary here was built in the 8th century BC. The Didymaion was presumably built in the 3rd century BC to replace an older temple that was burnt by the Persians. Didyma's Temple of Apollo was the fourth largest temple in the Greek world, famous as a place of oracles and fortune-telling. It was a dipteral decastyle (10x21) measuring 51.13 x 109.34m. Its columns were of the Ionic order. It sat on a high podium with seven steps. Medusa's head is one of the most used ornamental elements in this temple.
