The site is on the Milas-soke highway, in Kapkiri village, 39km from Milas. The ancient city existed as far back as the 8th century BC. The Temple of Athena behind the harbor is one of the best preserved buildings on the site. The agora, which was built in the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century BC), still exhibits a very well-preserved south wall of exquisite beauty. There are some caves with frescoes up on the mountain above Heracleia.
