Caesarea is located at the north of the Sharon area on the Mediterranean coast. The theater is the most ancient of the theaters discovered in Israel. It was built during Herod's reign (37-4 BC), and was active for hundreds of years. Other remarkable structures are the Reef Palace, Herod's amphitheater, a temple, the street system, a public bathhouse and the market (2nd-3rd centuries AD). In the 9th century a fortified town was built around the port.
