The site is located in the basin of Guvrin Stream, 150 feet above sea level. Maresha is mentioned several times in the Bible. Excavations revealed a water cistern ("The Polish Cave"), a columbarium cave, a bath cave and olive oil plants, all from the 4th-3rd centuries BC, as well as houses, an underground system and a burial cave from the Hellenistic period (3rd-2nd centuries BC). The Byzantine church of "Sandahanna" (St. Anna) was renovated by the Crusaders in 1134.
