Shefar'am was a Jewish town in the Galilee. During the late Roman period (2nd century AD) it was the place of the Sanhedrin, and a small Jewish community lived here until the 19th century. Inside the town remained a 17th century synagogue. The castle, whose traces may still be found in the middle of Shefar'am, is one of the strongholds used by Al Umar's family to enforce their rule in the Galilee in the 18th century.
