During Hellenistic times (3rd century BC), a town by the name of Hippos was established on the flat mountain above Ein Gev and the Sea of Galilee. From the ancient town there are just a few traces. The town was fortified by a wall and towers; a main street crossed it from west to east. Between the streets were blocks of buildings. Among the public buildings, the Nymphaeum was identified. Four Byzantine churches were also found here.
