In this area Jesus is believed to have ascended to heaven (Luke, 24:50-51, Acts 1:9-11).
The Dome or Chapel of the Ascension stands near the top of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. It is a Christian and Muslim holy site. The octagonal structure contains stone imprints of what is believed to be the footprints of Jesus.
At first a church was built here around 390 AD by Poimenia, a pious Roman lady. The original building was destroyed by the Persians in 614, and rebuilt by the Crusaders in the 12th century. The church was converted into a mosque by Saladin in 1187. The muslims added the dome giving the shrine its Islamin character.
