Tiberias was founded as the capital of Herod Antipas' kingdom around the year 20 AD. It was named Tiberias in honor of the reigning Roman Emperor Tiberius. The city was the last residence of the Sanhedrin, and it is considered to be one of the four holy cities of the Jews in the Land of Israel. So far excavations discovered the city wall, the city gates, a basilica, bathhouses, a harbor and some residential houses.
