Nabatean Sites

The Nabateans were trading tribes, perhaps of Arabian origin, who appeared in the Mediterranean area in the 4th century BC. They traded perfumes, spices and fabrics with Hellenistic Greece and later with Rome. In the 1st century AD they turned to agriculture using their knowledge of water production and irrigation. The once nomadic tribes settled sporadically along their caravan routes and became known for the fine wine they produced. The Nabateans embraced Christianity in the 4th century AD.
